Tag orders based on the referring site

If you are looking to tag orders based on the URL of the referrer that brought the customer to your store, then this is the criteria for you.

Shopify retains the full URL of the referring site and applies it as an attribute in the order data. Our referring site criteria is able to analyze this attribute by looking at either the domain or path of the URL or both.

How to use the criteria

To create a workflow using this criteria, click on the Create New Workflow button from the main Workflows view:

Define the trigger to determine at which point you would like the workflow to run, we recommend selecting the trigger when orders are created.

Click the Add criteria to my workflow button:

The Referring site criteria can be found within the Other category in the Select criteria pop-up window:

Click the Use in your workflow button on the right to select this criteria.

You will then be presented with the following screen:

You can either select the Domain or the Path for the criteria:

Analyze the Domain or Path, or both?

The referring site criteria will let you analyze either the Domain or the Path of the referring site URL.

Domain: The first part of the referring site URL is the domain name. This is the top level domain of the URL.You need to include any subdomains (like www) e.g. www.ayearssupplyof.co.uk, www.ayearssupplyof.co.uk

Please Don't include " http://" or " https://" in the value you enter!!!

Path: This is the part of the URL after the domain name and can contain the directory structure and any variables used in the URL. e.g. /monthly-subscriptions?p=123456789

If you'd like your workflow to analyze both the Domain and the Path of the referring site URL, then just add another criteria to the workflow, one for the domain and one for the path:

Criteria Options

Select the condition that the criteria must match:

Here is what each option within the conditions dropdown will do:

is: If the Domain or Path of the referring site matches exactly the value specified.

is NOT: If the Domain or Path of the referring site does not match the exact value specified.

contains: If the Domain or Path of the referring site contains the specified alphanumeric string.

does not contain: If the Domain or Path of the referring site does not contain the specified alphanumeric string.

Select the option that most suits your needs.

Enter the string that you are looking to find or match in the referring site URL:

Defining the Tag name

Define the tag name/names that you would like to be applied when this workflow matches your criteria (don't forget to click the Add fixed tag button):

Saving and naming your workflow

It is mandatory to name your workflow to save or edit it. Otherwise, you won't be able to save the changes or even test them. Then, check the summary of your workflow, and if happy, either Test your Workflow against an existing order or hit Save Workflow:

Dynamic Tags

Both the referring domain and referring path can be automatically applied as tags on orders by using our Dynamic Tags option:

Is this workflow compatible with Backdating?
