Tag orders based on the shipping carrier/tracking company assigned to manual fulfillments

If you're looking to tag your orders based on the Shipping Carrier/Tracking Company assigned to fulfillment, then this criteria can help.

What is the shipping carrier?

If you use a carrier or shipping service within your store, the shipping carrier will automatically be assigned to your fulfillment.

If you manually fulfill your orders, however, then you have the ability to select the shipping carrier at the time of fulfilling the order:


Shopify has a list of preset shipping carriers for Merchants to choose from:


They also offer you the ability to specify your own shipping carrier:


The shipping carrier selected for the fulfillment will then appear in the tracking_company attribute of the fulfillment data in the order. This is the field that this criteria will be looking at.

How to use the criteria

To create a workflow using this criteria, click on the Create New Workflow button from the main Workflows view:

We recommend that you use this workflow with one of the following triggers: 

  • Run this workflow when orders are fulfilled
  • Run this workflow when orders are partially fulfilled
  • Run this workflow when fulfillment is updated

Click the Add criteria to my workflow button:

The Shipping carrier for manual fulfillment criteria can be found within the Fulfillment category in the Select criteria pop-up window:

Click the  Use in your workflow button to select this criteria.

You will then be presented with the following screen:

Click on the Choose option dropdown to select a defined shipping carrier:

Choose the name of the tag you'd like to see on all orders that match this workflow and enter it into the Tag the order with the section:

Click on the  Add fixed tag button.

Saving and naming your workflow

It's worth giving your workflow a name to help you identify it at a later date, so add a workflow name in the New Workflow section, check the summary of your workflow and if happy, either Test your Workflow against an existing order or hit Save Workflow:

What happens next?

Depending on the trigger that you have selected, each time fulfillment is either created or updated, the workflow containing the shipping carrier assigned to manual fulfillment criteria will analyze each fulfillment. in an order.

It will check them to see if they have a tracking_company attribute that matches your defined shipping carrier. If it does, then it will apply the fixed tag that you specified in your workflow.

Please Note:

Only fulfillments with a status of success will be analysed by this criteria.


This criteria option will work when Backdating your orders.

Dynamic Tagging

The Shipping carrier assigned to manual fulfillment criteria can not currently be applied to the order as a Dynamic Tag.
