Tag orders based on the customers total spend

If you'd like to tag orders based on the customers total spend with your store, then our Customers total spend criteria can do just that.

Please note:

Customers total spend is based on the total value of all orders placed by this customer, including the order that is being analysed by this workflow.

You can exclude the value of the current order from the total spend calculation by selecting "Exclude the current order value" from the criteria options.

How to use the criteria

To create a workflow using this criteria, click on the Create New Workflow button from the main Workflows view:

Define the trigger to determine at which point you would like the workflow to run, we recommend selecting the trigger when orders are created.

Click the Add criteria to my workflow button:

The Customers total spend  criteria can be found within the Customer category in the Select criteria pop-up window:

Click the Use in your workflow button on the right to select this criteria.

You will then be presented with the following conditions to select from:

When configuring this criteria, you can choose if you want the criteria to match when the customer's total spend is:

  • Greater than
  • Greater than or equal to
  • Less than
  • Less than or equal to
  • Equal to

...the value that you specify:

Exclude current order value

As mentioned at the top of this article, you can exclude the value of the order that this workflow is analysing in the total spend calculation by selecting the Exclude the current order value checkbox:

If you do not select this checkbox, then the total spend amount will be calculated based on all orders (including the current order being analyzed) added together.

Popular use case:

For illustration purposes, let's say that we'd like to tag orders where the customers total spend is more than $500 (prior to the current order).

Select Greater than from the available options:

Enter 500 as the value and select the Exclude the current order value checkbox

Choose the name of the tag you'd like to see on all orders that match this workflow and enter it into the Add tags when the workflow matches section. In this example we have used the tag VIP Customer:

Remember to hit return or click on the Add fixed tag button.

Saving and naming your workflow

It's worth giving your workflow a name to help you identify it at a later date, so add a workflow name in the New Workflow section, check the summary of your workflow and if happy, either Test your Workflow against an existing order or hit Save Workflow:

Any new order will now be checked to see if the Customers total spend is Greater than 500 (based on the currency of your store). If the workflow matches, the order will be tagged with VIP Customer.

Backdating

This criteria will work when Backdating your orders, however, the Customers total spend calculation will be based on the current total spend amount and not the total spend amount on the date that the order was created.

If you have chosen to enable the Exclude the current order value option in the workflow, then the backdate will subtract the current order value from that calculation.

Dynamic Tagging

The Customers total spend criteria is not currently available as a Dynamic Tag.
